چکیده

[1] In situ observation of the Earth’s magnetosphere has identified Hall magnetic fields as a key signature of collisionless magnetic reconnection. The inflow portion of the reconnection diffusion region is further characterized by strong electron pressure anisotropy. These two features are tightly linked in a quantitative model, which is verified using fully kinetic simulations. The model predicts the Hall field strength and the maximum electron pressure anisotropy as functions of the upstream ratio of electron fluid and magnetic pressures. Citation: Le, A., J. Egedal, W. A Model for Spontaneous Onset of Fast Magnetic Reconnection

We present a model for the spontaneous onset of fast magnetic reconnection in a weakly collisional plasma, such as the solar corona. When a current layer of macroscopic width undergoes collisional (Sweet-Parker) reconnection, a narrow dissipation region forms around the X-line. This dissipation region naturally becomes narrower during the reconnection process as stronger magnetic fields are con...

Coupling between global geometry and the local hall effect leading to reconnection-layer symmetry breaking.

The coupling between the global reconnection geometry and the local microphysics, caused by the Hall effect, is studied during counterhelicity plasma merging in the magnetic reconnection experiment. The structure of the reconnection layer is significantly modified by reversing the sign of the toroidal fields, which affects the manifestation of the Hall effect in the collisionless regime. The lo...

Experimental Verification of the Hall Effect during Pull Reconnection in MRX

The most important goal in magnetic reconnection research is to explain the fast magnetic reconnection phenomena observed in nature. The Hall effect has been found to drive fast magnetic reconnection in 2D numerical simulations [1]. An out-of-plane quadrupole magnetic field found in these numerical simulations [2,3] is the hallmark of the Hall effect. This quadrupole magnetic field has been obs...

Scaling of asymmetric Hall magnetic reconnection

[1] The scaling of the reconnection rate and ion and electron outflow speeds with upstream magnetic field strengths and plasma mass densities during asymmetric collisionless (Hall) reconnection without a guide field is studied using two-dimensional two-fluid simulations. The results agree with a recent theory by Cassak and Shay (2007). It is found that the normalized reconnection rate is on the...

Experimental verification of the Hall effect during magnetic reconnection in a laboratory plasma.

In this Letter we report a clear and unambiguous observation of the out-of-plane quadrupole magnetic field suggested by numerical simulations in the reconnecting current sheet in the magnetic reconnection experiment. Measurements show that the Hall effect is large in the collision-less regime and becomes small as the collisionality increases, indicating that the Hall effect plays an important r...
